Cameroon –Honor and Loyalty/ARMY AND YOUTH : An indomitable pair

It is common knowledge that discipline isthe major strength of the Armed Forces. Once this is accepted, the relationshipwith youth is implicitly established, as the Army is in essence and for themost part made up of the youthful population of the Nation, a crop of youngboys and girls driven by an unwavering love for their country, united by theideals of fraternity and prosperity. These are young people who togethercultivate a spirit of probity, ambition for fulfilment, a sense of effort, andthe moral requirement of a job well done.

“Youth, moral, civic and entrepreneurialrearmament, a guarantee for discipline in building a united and prosperousCameroon”. What could be better than the theme of this 57th edition of theYouth Day celebrated today Saturday, February 11, 2023, to exalt these moralfoundations!

For it must be acknowledged that in ourAfrican countries in particular, the youth population seems to be in a state ofmoral and psychological decay, considering the apparent narrowness of theprospects for socio-professional integration. There is a feeling of demoralisationamplified by deceptive speeches propagatingmoney-mindedness and lust. And tomake matters worse, the relaxation observed in the transmission and respect ofthe internal codes of societal lifein favour of lawless individualswho arecompletely carried away by television and social media, has completely plungedyoung people into a kind of cultural floating, opening the way to all sorts ofdistortions.

The psychological rupture resulting fromthis combination of permissiveness no longer allows our youth to develop theirown potential and talents, thanks to a mastery of themselves. Instead, the youthpopulation is more inclined to take the wayward paths of ease, very often outof a desire for the notoriety conferred by gain, than in an honest project ofpersonal development.

Human and drug trafficking, immigrationnetworks, armed terrorist groups, and more recently, these strange operationsto recruit volunteers to form international legions to fight in distant landsin return for payment, are all illegal and dangerous activities, so manymirages in which the dreams of young people are dashed, in addition topresenting real sources of concern for our continent, which is rendered morevulnerable by the drain on its human and intellectual resources.

Should we then despair over our youth? Not at all!Within this group visibly lacking in discipline, there are many young people who shun bad behaviour; a majority of them areleading a quiet and modest life, are hard-working and responsible. It is from this enterprising youth that our Army renews its strength. At the same time indomitable fighters, tireless builders and unwavering patriots, such are the young people on whom our Army relies to defend the territory, protect the people, and participate in nation building.

Happy celebration to the Cameroonian youth!
