Cameroon - Honor and Loyalty : Global security and hegemony: the challenges of professionalising the Armed Forces

Although human nature has changed and continues to change since its origins, neither its organisation nor its practices have changed fundamentally. Human beings are creatures with a gregarious instinct and a fear of their fellow humans. They are driven by an unshakeable belief in nature, and consumed by a fierce thirst for knowledge and therefore for power. It’s undeniable that in their quest for well-being, their discoveries and inventions have been crucial to human development, including the wheel, gunpowder, steam, penicillin and electricity.

However, far from satisfying the human desire for power and security, the conveniences resulting from these achievements have, on the contrary, exacerbated it. Hence, for example, the creation of organisations or armies in States, whose main task to this day is to use force to enforce the desire of some people to impose their will on others. Hence the invasions, the religious wars, the slave trade, colonisation and the tendencies and intensifications of hegemony.

After having moved the earth up and down, after having scoured the sea and its mysterious depths, after having explored the immensity of space with its planets and galaxies, human beings had to manipulate the infinitely small to finally realise the dangerous and unsustainable nature of an aggressive attitude towards their fellow humans and their environment, the possibility of total annihilation being in contradiction with their quest for eternity.

From time to time in the past, but more and more often today, nature, devastated but untamed, fair and merciless in its wrath, also serves as a reminder that neither its resources nor its patience are inexhaustible. Fortunately, humanity seems to be beginning to reassess the concepts of shared destiny and sustainable development.

Imperatively, the instinct for survival and the urgency of development now require everyone, everywhere, including the armed forces, to contribute actively to development. In just over sixty years of existence, the achievements and expertise of the Cameroonian army in this field have become benchmarks. The most remarkable thing is that this army, far from being a mere vector of Cameroon’s military power, is also, and very successfully, the guardian of the human conscience.

The Cameroonian army fights wars, but only those that are imposed on it. Moreover, it does so in strict compliance with the natural, codified and universally recognised human rights. The origin, culture and training of its personnel predestine it to do so. The appropriateness of the action to be taken, proportionality in the use of force, impartiality and fairness in the resolution of problems, humanity towards the combatants of the other side and the civilian population, and respect for the environment are all factors that guide the conduct of the soldiers of the Cameroonian army, the pride of an entire continent. /-
