Honor and Loyalty : Peace in Cameroon: Narrative versus reality

In recent months, a precarious calm has prevailed around Lake Chad. Terrorist activities on and around the lake have decreased significantly. Life is gradually returning to normal in the countries bordering this area, which was hitherto considered a major hotbed of insecurity. With the return of the rains, the regeneration of nature and agro-pastoral activities are helping to erase the unbearable memory of years of disasters and massacres perpetrated by the dogmatic extremists of obscurantist and separatist sects.

It is true that there are still occasional reports of armed violence in our administrative regions of the Far-North, North-West and South-West. But these are only sporadic and in all these flashes of violence, the invasive momentum of the terrorists and criminal affiliates has been brought to a screeching halt by the vigorous response of our valiant Defence and Security Forces.

Despite the cynical hype generated by certain media platforms, the current robberies bear no resemblance to the systematic and large-scale raids witnessed when these nebulous groups were at the height of their capacity to wreak havoc. This begs the question: why is so much energy being spent on constructing obviously false narratives, and why is so much interest being taken in promoting the bloody exploits of a gang that nobody wants at home???

All this leads us to believe that foreign agents are at the helm of terrorist activity in our country. And if they fail to win the battle on the ground, it could always be useful to continue psychological misinformation operations in the hope of winning over public opinion after confusing its perceptions.

It is game over for the killers of our people. With their numbers dwindling to a trickle, their weapons and supplies shrinking due to the breakdown of supply lines, the depth of their desperation is forcing the enemy coalition to live off the land. Gone are the pleasurable fantasies of a blood-soaked caliphate of slavery, gone are the dreams of omnipotence over a proto-state indulging in all manner of licentious practices.

Cameroon has vowed to break this vicious circle of territorial fragmentation and human degradation with remarkable efficiency, responsibility and sovereignty. The Nation and its Army are working tirelessly to achieve this. The fact that vulnerable people, such as refugees and displaced persons are able to engage in economic activities is clear evidence that calm and security have returned to these former crisis zones.

However, if we look at the war against asymmetric threats, as it is being waged in different latitudes and on all continents, it is unique in that it is protracted over time, with peaks of activity that are more or less intense and recurrent. It is on the basis of these gradations, capacities and events that we must understand the ups and downs of the war that Cameroon is waging against fundamentalist terrorists in the Far-North and separatist terrorists in the North-West and South-West Regions. /-
