Where is the world heading? Where is our world going? This question is asked more and more often. But instead of a reasonable answer, we are met with a judgement that is binding, imperious and without recourse. "You don’t discuss the times, you live them." And it is precisely this absolutism that makes us think about the moral drift of contemporary society. For it seems to us humanly healthy and intellectually sound to know which of man or time determines the other, in time, space, content and meaning.
Posed in this way, the question seems to hark back to the age-old dispute over the conception of the world and the origins of life. But you don’t need to have studied philosophy or metaphysics at length, and you don’t need to have lived long, to come to the conclusion that it is man, through the immutability of temporality, who marks his era by exercising the full extent of his authority through the choices he makes in life. Seemingly unattainable and unfathomable a priori, the era is once again conceivable, structurable, perfectible and even reproducible. Fortunately!
For we men, and we Cameroonians in particular, can look back on a time when we could boast of having friends in every tribe in Cameroon. It was a time, not so long ago, when speaking as many of our numerous national languages as possible, enjoying delicious culinary specialities from the remotest parts of our country, and having travelled through all our regions were all legitimate reasons for pride. Proclaiming one’s tribal origins did not unleash the wrath of ostracism or an avalanche of ridicule. It aroused curiosity, inspired sympathy and called for brotherhood.
As children, we still cherish the memory of the good times we spent with our neighbour from elsewhere. We felt like an integral part of his household, enjoying the same affection he gave to his own offspring. Our curiosity was only satisfied by sharing the sociological intimacy of the other. The resulting mixture acted as a buffer against possible misunderstandings, while guaranteeing the safety of the community. Many of these fraternities of opportunity have shown a longevity that still defies distance and stands the test of time.
You say you don’t discuss the times? Perhaps not! But rather than allow this immateriality, born of the confines of our unconscious drives, to impose on us a look and feel that is far from appropriate to our quest for the thousand and one colours of brotherhood, we urgently need to return to our roots.
In the face of the rapid globalisation of moral perversion, the prelude to the extinction of the human spirit, in the face of the vicious tetanisation of our intellectual agility by algorithmic digitalisation, in the face of ideological tendencies that call for the sociability of our desire for socialisation, let’s not present ourselves as resigned victims. We must, and we can, reject this overcritical tendency to abandon our diversity, which is a source of spiritual and material enrichment and solidarity. The diversity of our tribes is a source of cohesion and full development.
So let’s bring back to the present the harmony of the past, which was neither a slogan nor a painful memory. Since living together has always been part of our collective DNA, enriched by the many encounters of previous generations with compatriots from different backgrounds, it is up to us to perpetuate the tradition. It is up to those of us who have lived through this era to pass it on to our children.
With the crucial support of our soldiers, who daily experience the benefits of the invaluable contributions of the plurality of our tribes, and forged together in the crucible of citizenship, we must all preserve, uphold and defend with all our might this legendary living-together that has forged the reputation of our people and our country in this era of the collapse of ancestral social values. It is crucial and urgent that we return to our ancestral human roots before our world collapses. /-
